Celebrating 500 Rock Concerts Tonight At Red Rocks

September 12, 2016
I'm attending my 500th rock concert tonight - Hall & Oates at Red Rocks Amphitheater with my daughter. 500 is more than most, far less than others - but worthy of 10 random thoughts, stats and memories…

1 - FIRST CONCERT
KISS w/ Vandenberg and Riot. 1/14/84 at Convention Center Arena in San Antonio, TX – KISS were on the "Lick It Up" tour. My friend Brandon and I bought identical KISS concert shirts and I spent my last $5 on a pair of KISS wristbands.

2 - BANDS I'VE SEEN THE MOST
Def Leppard (24), Queensryche (15), KISS (12), Poison (11), King's X (9)

3 – BEST SHOWS EVER
Def Leppard w/ Tesla – 2/12/88 @ McNichols Arena (Hysteria tour)
Prince – 8/28/04 @ Pepsi Center (Musicology tour)
Boston w/ Farrenheit – 10/13/87 @ McNichols Arena (Third Stage tour)
Luciano Pavarotti – 3/22/01 @ Pepsi Center
Take 6 – 4/27/89 @ UNC Jazz Festival

4 – WORST SHOWS EVER
Ashlee Simpson, Nashville Star, Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra XL

5 – THE SHOWS I WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE
"Weird Al" Yankovic, Take 6, Henry Rollins

6 – I SAW THEM BEFORE THEY WERE HUGE
When I worked at KS-104 in 1996, 4/5 of Backstreet Boys sang A Cappella in our conference room. They were on a promotional tour trying to generate some radio airplay in the U.S. I remember our receptionist begging people to go watch them sing - there were maybe 10 of us in there. It's a shame those guys never made it big…

7 – BEST BAND NAMES
Kinky, Foxy Shazam, Plastilina Mosh, It Should Have Been Lars

8 – DUMBEST BAND NAMES
Doozle, Novus Folium, Broncho, Podunk, Bodagaz, I Am Cassettes, Soap, Joe & The Press

9 – TWO FOR ONE
I saw Sarah McLachlan at Pepsi Center on 7/20/04, dropped my wife off at home and then drove all the way back to downtown Denver to see W.A.S.P. at the Bluebird Theater.

10 – HUGS NOT DRUGS
Smokey Robinson greeted everyone at his Paramount Theater meet & greet (8/14/04) with a warm hug like we were all old friends.
