The best "Cover Tunes" ever..."The List" was Undercover toni

I gotta tell you...this is fun!  I am three nights into "The List" and your response has been fantastic.  Thank You!  Tonight we were "Undercover".  I played what I feel are the 7 best cover-tunes ever.  It's quite an art to take another artists  song and then make it your own...just ask the kids on American Idol.  In case you missed it my choices were;

  • Santana-Black Magic Woman (originally Fleetwood Mac)

  • Cream-Crossroads (Robert Johnson)

  • The Black Crowes-Hard to Handle (Otis Redding)

  • CS&N-Woodstock (Joni Mitchell)

  • Talking Heads-Take Me to the River (Al Green)

  • Joe Cocker-With a Little Help From My Friends (Beatles)

  • Jimi Hendrix-All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)-My choice as the best "Cover" ever.  Your thoughts...drop me a note!

Tomorrow on "The List"-What do The Beatles, Steely Dan and Guns and Roses Have in can "Lick" it!

Good list, I enjoyed listening to it! I've always thought SRV's cover of 'Little Wing' bested the original. Plus, nothing from the Grateful Dead?!? They were the best cover band ever!! :)

How about Led Zeppelins "In My Time of Dying"? by Bob Dylan. For that matter most of Zeppelins first two albums are covers and are considered classics.

Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the Light" by Bruce Springsteen.

Great list. Summertime Blues-The Who deserves at least an honorable mention. Was it Eddie Cochran who wrote it?

Dan, I agree about the R&R Hall. Can you believe it took this long for Lynyrd Skynyrd? Good list but how could you possibly leave off the Moody Blues? and maybe J. Giels? whatdayathink?

As I recall Bob Dylan made his start by doing Dave Van Ronk's House of the Risin Sun on his very first LP, then came Eric Burden's version. Should have at least been an honorable mention.

What about Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart? Isn't that Jeff Beck playing guitar?

One must enjoy Hayseed Dixie covering AC DC's "she shook me all night long". Beleive me, THIS is the greatest cover of all time! It is a complete morphing of presentations. Be prepared for enjoyment which is currently illegal in most states!
